Roseanne Weinrich, a resident of Butler Twp. in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, presented a petition to the Schuylkill County Commissioners, advocating for an immediate statewide moratorium on data center development.
Weinrich, a retired science teacher, expressed concerns over the "alarming increase" of hyperscale data centers in rural Pennsylvania communities, arguing that permits are being fast-tracked with little public input and non-disclosure agreements. She highlighted potential environmental and personal harms, including strain on local power grids and infrastructure, water consumption and pollution, and noise pollution.
Weinrich's petition calls for a halt on all permits and construction until comprehensive studies can assess these impacts. Her presentation followed Maine's Legislature approving a similar statewide moratorium bill. The Schuylkill County Commissioners did not commit to signing the petition.
Chairman Larry Padora acknowledged that data centers could be beneficial for Schuylkill County if built in appropriate locations and providing their own power, citing current projects planned in Kline Twp. and Highridge Business Park. He emphasized the significant tax revenue these centers could generate, potentially preventing tax increases for years, provided proper stipulations for water and power systems are in place.
