Tazewell County imposes 9-month data center moratorium
The Tazewell County Board in Illinois unanimously approved a nine-month moratorium on data center development. The pause will give the county time to develop regulations addressing issues such as zoning, noise, energy and water use, infrastructure, environmental impacts and traffic.
The Tazewell County Board unanimously approved a nine-month moratorium on data centers after months of discussion. The moratorium, recommended by the county’s Land Use Committee, is intended to give officials time to establish development regulations.
The county plans to examine potential zoning districts and standards covering setbacks, noise, lighting, energy and water consumption, cooling systems, electrical infrastructure, backup power, battery storage, environmental impacts, emergency response, traffic and decommissioning. The moratorium will remain in effect through July 28, 2027, unless the board repeals or modifies it earlier.
