The Metropolitan Development Commission in Indianapolis has approved a $4 billion data center project by Seattle-based Sabey Data Centers for the city's southeast side, specifically in Decatur Township. The decision came after weeks of debate and strong opposition from local residents, who cited concerns over potential environmental impacts, health risks, and a decrease in property values. Randi Berryman of Protect Decatur Township called the decision "a slap in the face," and resident Mark Smith questioned the developer's approach to zoning changes. Sabey Data Centers plans a campus spanning over 1 million square feet along Kentucky Avenue and Camby Road. The developer sought and received several zoning exceptions, including permission for a data center not typically allowed, fewer required parking spaces, and flexibility on building height and outdoor operational areas. While some at the hearing supported the project, including Jon Hooker of the Central Indiana Building and Construction Trades Council, City-County Councilor Joshua Bain, whose district includes parts of Decatur Township, expressed regret to the opposition for letting them down. Site preparation is expected to begin this year, with the first building slated for completion by 2028 and the second by 2030. Opponents, however, have vowed not to give up, with Berryman stating their intention to pursue legal action.
