The Stop the Data Center advocacy group hosted a teach-in at the University of Michigan for students, staff and Ypsilanti Township residents opposed to the University’s planned data center in collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Speakers characterized the project as advancing military and academic interests while offering limited benefits to the local community.

Opponents, including assistant information professor Justine Zhang and resident Robin Wylie, cited potential toxic chemicals, cooling-system leaks, water impacts and health risks because the proposed facility would be located near a river. University librarian Craig Smith questioned the project’s nearly $850 million cost and said Los Alamos is expected to receive about 90% access while the University receives 10%. Students and organizers discussed expanding protests, petitions and engagement with local officials and the University’s Board of Regents.
