Grant County locals speak against proposed data center
Residents and local officials in Grant County, Arkansas, are opposing a proposed data center by EdgeConneX near Sheridan. A proposed data center by EdgeConneX northeast of Sheridan, Arkansas, is facing significant opposition from local residents and members of the Grant County Quorum Court. This development follows a similar controversy over AI data centers in Pulaski County.
During a recent Quorum Court meeting, County Judge Randy Pruitt identified EdgeConneX as the company behind the project. Judge Pruitt and Quorum Member Michael Nevins stated that for EdgeConneX to receive desired tax abatements, the project must align with the county's terms, particularly regarding water usage. They emphasized that if the company plans to use millions of gallons of water annually, a tax abatement would not be considered.
Despite potential tax incentives tied to community benefits, many residents, including Brodie Chanel whose backyard borders the proposed site, are primarily concerned with preserving their way of life, community quietness, and health. Local signs reflect widespread sentiment against the project, fearing deforestation and a lack of local utility.
County leaders have pledged to consider these concerns as EdgeConneX proceeds through a four-to-five-month due diligence period before negotiations can commence. EdgeConneX did not respond to requests for comment.
