Gov. JB Pritzker said legislation regulating data centers remains a priority for Illinois lawmakers during the fall veto session. The proposed POWER Act would require data centers to bear energy costs and meet environmental protections, but Pritzker has not endorsed a statewide construction moratorium.

Gov. JB Pritzker said Illinois lawmakers may advance data center regulation during the fall veto session, although disagreements remain over the legislation. He has urged passage of the POWER Act, or Protecting Our Water, Energy, and Ratepayers Act, which would make data centers responsible for energy costs and environmental protections.

Pritzker stopped short of supporting a total moratorium on data center construction in Illinois. The comments came during a broader discussion of stalled housing legislation and proposals involving a potential Chicago Bears stadium.
