A proposed data center project near Spokane has been paused following community pushback. Candidates for the Washington House of Representatives discussed whether the state should regulate data center development and address concerns about water availability, electricity costs and environmental impacts.

One candidate argued that data centers are being built in response to growing demand and that Spokane offers favorable conditions, including cooler weather and relatively affordable, cleaner power. Michelle said she is not opposed to data centers but would seek a state moratorium if elected, along with baseline environmental studies and remediation bonds to protect nearby communities from pollution or other harms.
