Ohio Lawmakers begin review of data center impact across state
Ohio's Joint Data Center Committee has begun reviewing the statewide impact of data center projects. Governor Mike DeWine has ordered a hold on tax exemptions for future data center developments, citing over $1 billion in exemptions already granted. Lawmakers are seeking facts before implementing new state policies.
Ohio's Joint Data Center Committee, comprising members from both parties in the Ohio House and Senate, has commenced hearings to assess the potential benefits and challenges associated with the increasing number of data center projects across the state. Lawmakers are seeking comprehensive information before making any significant decisions or introducing new state policies concerning these developments.
During recent committee hearings, officials from the energy sector, data center industry, and state government provided testimony regarding the impacts of these projects. Governor Mike DeWine has intervened by ordering a halt on tax exemptions for all future data center projects, following the revelation that existing tax exemptions have already surpassed $1 billion. Currently, approximately 200 data centers operate within Ohio. The committee is scheduled to hear public testimony as it continues its review.
