NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has put forward a bold proposition: shifting AI data centers into Earth's orbit as a solution to the growing conflicts over land, water, and grid capacity in the United States. Speaking on Wednesday, Isaacman highlighted that solar-powered orbital facilities could harness the sun's energy without competing for resources, directly tackling voter pushback against the rapid expansion of data centers. A recent Fox News poll indicated significant opposition, with 70% of voters against local AI data center construction and 79% advocating for a slower pace to address environmental and community concerns, particularly regarding energy and water consumption, pollution, and noise.

Despite the considerable engineering challenges, such as heat dissipation and the need for reliable launches and radiation-resistant hardware, several companies are actively pursuing this concept. Google is developing "Project Suncatcher," a moonshot initiative to deploy its TPU chips on solar-powered, laser-linked satellites, with two prototype launches planned by early 2027. SpaceX is also advancing an ambitious version, proposing a large "AI1" satellite and establishing a factory in Texas to mass-produce these units by late 2027. Additionally, startup Starcloud has already conducted small-scale tests, launching a satellite with an Nvidia H100 chip and successfully running AI models in space, with a commercial mission slated for 2027.

SpaceX has also sought approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy up to 1 million orbital data-center satellites. The FCC has accepted this application for review, underscoring the serious consideration being given to space-based data infrastructure as a potential answer to Earth-bound development hurdles.
