Developer sheds light on Dove Creek data center as commissioners mull options
The Tom Green County Commissioners’ Court decided not to pursue a temporary moratorium on data centers in Precinct 4, despite concerns from citizens and the proposed Beacon Data Centers project in Dove Creek. A commissioner expressed concerns about state laws favoring developers but vowed to explore other legal avenues to oppose the project.
The Tom Green County Commissioners’ Court recently convened to discuss a proposed data center development by Beacon Data Centers in Precinct 4, specifically the "Westline Site" in Dove Creek. The meeting saw representatives from Beacon Data Centers address questions from numerous concerned citizens regarding the project, which is currently undergoing feasibility studies. Plans for the facility, should it proceed, include de-salination and natural gas facilities to address water and power needs. Company representatives also stated they have not yet constructed any data centers but are exploring sites in Canada and Texas.
Ultimately, the Commissioners’ Court opted against pursuing a temporary moratorium on data center development. Commissioner Shawn Nanny of Precinct 4 articulated the court's rationale, explaining that while he is not deterred by the prospect of lawsuits, the state's current legal framework heavily favors such facilities, putting counties at a disadvantage. Nanny expressed concern about the potential financial burden on taxpayers if the county were to engage in litigation against a developer, noting that such costs could exceed the county's annual budget.
Despite the decision not to enact a moratorium "for now," Commissioner Nanny affirmed his commitment to opposing the project. He stated he is actively exploring "other avenues" to "stop them, hopefully shut them down," emphasizing a strategy to "fight fire with fire" through "the legal way and the right way."
