Monticello officials postpone land annexation vote as residents protest data center
Monticello officials postponed a land annexation vote following strong resident protests, who fear the annexation would pave the way for a data center. Residents voiced concerns about transparency, and a city councilwoman also expressed opposition to the current process. The decision on the annexation of the three parcels of land will be revisited at a meeting next month.
Monticello, Georgia, city officials have postponed a crucial land annexation vote after significant pushback from Jasper County residents. The residents protested at a City Hall meeting, expressing fears that the annexation of three parcels of land would facilitate the construction of a data center. Kimberly Krautter, a resident, criticized the city's lack of transparency regarding the proposed annexation, urging for more due diligence before a decision on such an impactful transaction.
Monticello City Councilwoman Gail Harrell echoed these sentiments, stating her opposition to the hearings until proper procedures are followed. Adam McGinnis, owner and broker for Southern Edge Realty and the land in question, was the sole speaker in favor of the annexation. Despite his advocacy, city officials ultimately voted to postpone the decision until their next meeting on August 11, allowing for further discussion on the matter.
