A community forum on artificial intelligence and data centers was held at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library in Flint, Michigan, on August 14. The event, organized by Sherrod Pigee of AI Data Center Education™, followed the City of Flint's June enactment of a 12-month moratorium on new data center projects, which was intended to allow for evaluation of their potential community impacts.
Dr. Terrance E. Dillard, author of “Erosion of Privacy,” discussed how data centers collect, retain, aggregate, and predict user behavior, emphasizing the privacy risks of modern AI systems and advocating for responsible innovation. Ida Byrd Hill, CEO of Automation Workz, highlighted the economic opportunities data centers could bring, contrasting Flint's poverty rate with that of Ashburn, Virginia, and arguing that rejecting technology risks driving away young talent.
Rafael Turner, Senior Community Affairs Manager for Consumers Energy Company, outlined Michigan’s utility regulatory framework, explaining that data centers are required to fund their own infrastructure to prevent residential rate increases. The discussion revealed community concerns regarding environmental impacts, water usage, noise, and the realization of local economic benefits. Councilwoman Candice Mushatt, a proponent of the moratorium, called for more detailed studies and greater transparency. Panelists acknowledged these concerns but maintained that technology-driven growth is vital for Flint's economic future. A proposal for a field trip to an operating data center was made to further educate residents.
