City of Topeka pauses data center considerations for 12 months
The Topeka City Council has approved a 12-month moratorium on data center development within the city limits. This pause will allow the city to study and establish policies related to public health and safety aspects of data center developments. The decision follows recent zoning changes approved by Shawnee County Commissioners to prepare for potential data center proposals.
The Topeka City Council has enacted a 12-month moratorium on data center development, effective immediately, to thoroughly evaluate the public health and safety implications of such projects. The decision, made at a recent meeting, provides the city with adequate time to research and outline comprehensive policies for future data center considerations.
This move comes as leaders from both the city and Shawnee County anticipate receiving development proposals from data center companies by the end of the year. Prior to the moratorium, Shawnee County Commissioners had approved zoning changes on July 2, following discussions a month earlier, to proactively prepare for potential data center arrivals. Two specific sites within Topeka were recently identified as potential locations for these developments.
