Entergy Louisiana has unveiled a "transformational" plan for a massive expansion of its electricity infrastructure in the state, entirely funded by tech giant Meta, to power Meta's new artificial intelligence data center located in Richland Parish. The comprehensive buildout is set to include over 5,200 megawatts of new natural gas-fueled combined-cycle power plants with future carbon capture and hydrogen co-firing capabilities, approximately 240 miles of new 500 kV transmission lines connecting South Louisiana to North Louisiana and Arkansas, and battery energy storage across three locations. Additionally, the plan involves upgrades to nuclear power generation, and Meta has pledged support for up to 2,500 megawatts of new renewable resources. Entergy stated that these investments will enhance grid reliability, improve system efficiency, and offer customer bill benefits for all Entergy Louisiana customers. This initiative marks the first project to be submitted under the Louisiana Public Service Commission’s recently adopted "Lightning Amendment," a new regulatory framework designed to facilitate large-scale economic development while ensuring regulatory oversight, customer protections, and system reliability. Construction on the extensive project cannot commence until regulators with the Louisiana Public Service Commission officially approve the detailed proposal.
