Monroe clarifies AI center study requirements

During a Monroe Township council meeting on July 22, resident Linda Sullivan questioned Mayor Greg Wolfe regarding the requirement for environmental studies for AI data centers. Mayor Wolfe explained that the planning board's application process for large-scale commercial facilities, including data centers, mandates several studies, potentially including an environmental impact study, as per township ordinances.
He clarified that while an environmental impact study is often required, a previously submitted data center application was rejected for being incomplete, meaning a full environmental study was not yet necessary. Sullivan received confirmation that township ordinances require applicants to submit an application to the planning board, which includes a checklist of up to 12 studies, with an environmental impact study being one of them for any large-scale commercial facility.
