Miami Township trustees extend data center development moratorium

Miami Township trustees extended the township’s moratorium on data center development for up to two years, suspending zoning permits, conditional-use permits and site-plan approvals. The extension gives the Zoning Commission more time to study data centers’ potential effects on utilities, infrastructure, water demand, the electric grid and land use.

Miami Township trustees extended the township’s data center moratorium through Nov. 19, 2028, or until permanent zoning amendments addressing data centers are adopted, whichever comes first. The moratorium suspends zoning permits, conditional-use permits and site-plan approvals while the Zoning Commission and Zoning Administrator Bryan Lucas study health, safety, utilities, infrastructure and long-term land-use impacts.

The revised resolution cites regional electric-grid capacity and high water demand as issues requiring review. The township has not reported receiving data center development inquiries, though a proposed 471-acre Amazon facility in nearby Clinton County has prompted public concern and legal challenges over transparency and public input.
