Kalamazoo’s data center moratorium moving forward
The Kalamazoo planning commission has unanimously agreed with the city commission to enact a moratorium on new applications for data centers and other high-tech facilities for up to a year. This pause is intended to allow the city to update zoning permits to regulate these new complexes and protect community interests. An additional recommendation was made to form a task force to study the issue.
The Kalamazoo planning commission has taken a significant step towards enacting a moratorium on data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations, and battery storage facilities within the city. The commission unanimously agreed with the Kalamazoo city commission to halt the acceptance of new permit applications for these high-tech facilities for up to one year.
City Commissioner Chris Praedel noted the unanimous vote also included an additional recommendation on how to further study the issue. Clerk Scott Borling added that the city's Environmental Concerns Committee suggested handing the next phase of this review over to a dedicated task force.
The purpose of this moratorium is to provide time for city zoning permits to be updated. These updates aim to establish new regulations for such complexes, ensuring the protection of community interests before further development proceeds.
