U-M selects preferred location for Los Alamos facility site

The University of Michigan has announced its selection of a 144-acre site along Textile Road near Bridge Road in Ypsilanti Township as the preferred location for its Los Alamos Research Computing Center. This $1.25 billion investment is touted by U-M officials as a source of new economic opportunities for Michigan and a means to prepare future scientific leaders.
However, the decision has been met with significant resistance from local authorities and residents. Ypsilanti Township Supervisor Brenda Stumbo decried the selection as a "travesty of justice," asserting that it disregards environmental concerns and community input. Ypsilanti Township attorney Douglas Winters further alleged that U-M officials are not adequately considering environmental impacts or the future threats associated with the development of nuclear weapons. U-M officials maintain that the chosen site will meet infrastructure needs while preserving natural features and providing substantial buffers for neighboring properties. A community town hall is scheduled for September 9th to discuss the project.
