Gov. Abbott Puts Temporary Stop to New Data Centers
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered an audit of all data centers planning to connect to the state's electric grid, citing public concerns over rising electricity bills. The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) has already adopted new rules requiring data centers to pay for new connections and undergo power usage screenings. Projects failing to comply will be denied grid connection, with companies also mandated to detail water usage, electricity consumption, tax breaks, ownership, and local impact.
Governor Greg Abbott has initiated a statewide crackdown on data centers in Texas amidst public concern over rising electricity bills. On Monday, Governor Abbott directed the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and its oversight agency, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC), to immediately commence an audit of all existing and planned data centers intending to connect to the state's electric grid.
The PUC has already implemented new regulations, mandating that data centers bear the costs associated with new electricity connections and undergo rigorous screenings of their projected power consumption. Governor Abbott emphasized that any project failing to adhere to the requirements set by the PUCT, ERCOT, and state law "must be denied connection to the Texas grid," underscoring a commitment to prioritize Texans.
The gubernatorial order further requires data center companies to provide detailed information on their planned water usage for cooling, total electricity consumption, any local tax incentives received, complete ownership listings, and strategies to mitigate the significant impact of their energy demands on local communities.
