Nevada data center debate reaches classroom as teachers union pushes against moratorium

Nevada's ongoing debate surrounding data center expansion has extended to the classroom, with the Clark County Education Association (CCEA) voicing its opposition to a proposed moratorium on new data center development.
John Vellardita, CCEA Executive Director, emphasized the potential opportunities within the data center industry and called for greater collaboration with state lawmakers to address concerns without outright blocking development. The union is pushing back against efforts to draft a bill that would impose a pause on data center expansion, noting that such a bill is currently being drafted for presentation at next year's legislative session.
The proposed moratorium is being championed by Senator Dean O'Neill, who the CCEA criticizes for what they perceive as a sudden shift in position. Senator O'Neill, however, refuted these claims, explaining that the landscape of data centers, particularly hyperscale facilities and AI products, has drastically changed since initial discussions a decade ago. She highlighted the new environmental implications that necessitate a different conversation in 2026, which were not present in 2015.
