Brazoria County residents raise concerns over potential data center project
Residents in Damon are opposing a potential large-scale data center project after CleanSpark acquired an agreement to purchase up to 447 acres along the Brazos River in Brazoria County. Community members are concerned about noise, pollution, wildlife, historical heritage and the lack of county regulatory tools to stop development in unincorporated areas.
Residents of Damon, Texas, held a community meeting to discuss CleanSpark’s planned acquisition of up to 447 acres in Brazoria County and the company’s stated intention to develop a large-scale data center. Residents said a map presented by the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office showed parcels containing solar panels and batteries, which they believe could support the project.
Community members, including resident Christine Clark, said they fear gas turbines, round-the-clock noise, lights and vibration, as well as impacts on wildlife, local history and Black family heritage. CleanSpark described itself as a data center developer in its acquisition announcement, while ABC13 reported that the company had not yet responded to questions. Residents said they intend to continue opposing the potential development.
