Google data center clears site plan review by Van Buren Township Planning Commission
The Van Buren Township Planning Commission approved the final site plan for Google's proposed $2 billion Project Cannoli data center in Wayne County, including a high-voltage switching station. The 230-acre campus will include three data processing facilities, and the project has also received tax incentives, an energy contract approval and a wetlands permit.
The Van Buren Township Planning Commission voted 5-1 to approve the final site plan and switching station for Google's proposed Project Cannoli data center near Haggerty Road and Interstate 94. The $2 billion, 230-acre campus is planned to include three data processing facilities, an office building and two network service buildings.
Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara said officials negotiated limits on generators, updated cooling towers and added berms and other design measures intended to reduce noise and visibility. Wayne County commissioners separately approved $125 million in tax incentives after overriding the county executive's veto, while the Michigan Public Service Commission approved DTE Energy's power contract subject to a condition that customers would not bear related costs.
The project has also received a joint wetlands permit from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy and is expected to provide funding for sidewalks and a community benefit fund supporting senior services, affordable housing and other county needs.
