The Iron County Commission is considering a Strategic Development Zone overlay that could impose new rules on data centers and other large developments. The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah opposes the proposal, citing concerns about tribal consultation and potential effects on its lands, water and other resources; no commission vote has been scheduled.

The Iron County Commission discussed a proposed Strategic Development Zone overlay ordinance that could establish additional land-use requirements for data centers, energy facilities, industrial campuses and related developments. The proposal follows the Planning Commission's decision to advance new data center rules and comes as the county's 180-day moratorium on data center applications approaches its Nov. 22 expiration.

The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah said the overlay could enable a large-scale data center near its trust lands and adversely affect tribal interests, cultural ties and natural resources. The tribe also objected to changes that it said reduced the county's obligation to consult with the sovereign tribal government. Commissioner Mike Bleak said the county is seeking a comprehensive approach to growth while balancing community concerns with private property rights. No final decision or vote has been scheduled.
