Commissioners hear support for data centers
A resident addressed the Lawrence County Commissioners, advocating for data center development and warning against new zoning regulations. He referenced a TeraWulf project in neighboring Boyd County, Kentucky, as an example of significant economic benefits that Lawrence County could achieve. The resident expressed opposition to any additional data center zoning in the county.
During a Lawrence County Commissioners meeting, resident Tim Dickens read a letter expressing his support for data center development and his opposition to new zoning regulations in the county. Dickens argued that imposing additional government rules and regulations could negatively impact economic growth. He highlighted the TeraWulf data center project in neighboring Boyd County, Kentucky, which represents a $4 billion investment, is expected to create 300 long-term jobs, and projected to generate $5-6 million in tax revenue for Boyd County schools and other participating counties.
Dickens asserted that Lawrence County deserves similar economic opportunities and warned against implementing any additional data center zoning at this time. Commissioner DeAnna Holliday thanked Dickens for his input, emphasizing the importance of open communication among community members. The discussion regarding data centers was a separate agenda item from earlier proclamations recognizing local historical sites.
