A proposed data center ordinance in Joplin, Missouri, is heading back to the Planning and Zoning Commission after the Joplin City Council tabled its final vote. The decision to table the ordinance followed significant public input and insights gained from a Missouri Municipal League conference in Jefferson City.

Joplin City Planner Tyler Bolair emphasized that addressing public concerns is paramount. He stated that revisions would be made to the initial draft, with significant changes focusing on wastewater and emissions language, along with other minor verbiage cleanups to ensure the ordinance is robust and clear.

The Joplin Sustainable Technology Alliance, through its Director Rebecca Collins, expressed appreciation for the increased communication with the city, noting a shift from initial public frustration to a more serious conversation where concerns are being addressed. The next planning and zoning meeting to discuss the revised ordinance is scheduled for Monday, July 13th, at 4 p.m. at city hall.
