Illinois People's Action (IPA) plans to protest a lack of transparency in Macon County's data center policy development at a Citizens Voluntary Advisory Committee meeting. The group demands the Macon County Board restructure the committee to include residents and restart its review process. This follows a previous protest at the Macon County Board's administrative offices.
Leaders from Illinois People's Action (IPA) are scheduled to attend a Citizens Voluntary Advisory Committee on Data Centers (CVAC) meeting in Decatur, Illinois, to protest what they describe as a lack of transparency and representation in Macon County's data center policy development.
This demonstration follows an earlier protest on August 6, where IPA leaders occupied the Macon County Board's administrative offices. During that event, the group demanded that County Board Chair Kevin Greenfield restructure the CVAC to include local residents and restart its review process, alleging that committee appointments were kept secret and meeting schedules were not made public.
Doris McKay, an IPA leader, emphasized the importance of public visibility in government processes, stating, "Trust in local government depends on people being able to see the process, not just the results. A decision the public couldn't watch being made is a decision that the public has every reason to doubt." The Macon County Board has yet to respond to the group's demands.
