Escambia County commissioners in Florida have unanimously voted to ban data centers within the county, following significant public opposition. The decision came after protestors gathered before the commission meeting, urging officials to prevent data center development due to concerns over environmental impact, water usage, noise pollution, and limited job creation.
The commissioners considered two options: formally declaring data centers impermissible under the county's current land development code, or scheduling a public hearing to adopt an ordinance to regulate them. Both options were approved. Commissioner Steven Barry acknowledged the concerns, noting issues with water consumption, land use, power grid strain, and the low number of jobs created by data centers.
The move by Escambia County follows similar actions by neighboring governments. The Pensacola City Council previously passed a one-year ban on large-scale data centers, and Santa Rosa County implemented a similar measure. The August 6 public hearing will provide residents another opportunity to contribute to the discussion before any permanent regulations are adopted.
