A new poll from the University of Texas' Texas Politics Project indicates that a majority of Texans oppose data centers in their communities, despite the state's emergence as a top destination for data center development. The survey revealed that 43% of Republicans and over 60% of Democrats are against new data center construction. Polling center director James Henson noted that opposition stems from various factors, including environmental concerns regarding water and resource use, as well as the significant local impact these facilities have on residents' lives.

In light of these findings, Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick have announced that data center regulation will be a legislative priority during next year's session. This focus on regulation comes as Texas continues to attract infrastructure vital for artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency mining, making the issue a prominent point of discussion for state policymakers.
