Gov: City of Palo, Linn County, Board of Supervisors
The City of Palo, Iowa, is preparing to host a town hall to discuss Google's proposed billion-dollar data center project. This development comes after Google previously worked with Linn County to establish a data center in an unincorporated area near the Duane Arnold Energy Center, which is slated for recommissioning.
Linn County's Board of Supervisors spent months developing a regulatory and economic framework for the project, focusing on long-term water sustainability, a critical concern given the substantial water consumption of data centers. However, upon completion of these new rules, county supervisors reported that Google informed them of a change in strategy.
Instead of adhering to the county's newly approved regulations, Google intends to pursue the same site but through annexation into the City of Palo. This move would allow Google to bypass the rules the county had meticulously established to protect citizens and ensure environmental responsibility. The town hall, scheduled for Tuesday night at the City Community Center Gym, will serve as a forum for public discussion on these plans.
