Gov: Indiana State Government, County Governments
Indiana Governor Mike Braun has addressed growing concerns from farmers and rural communities regarding the rapid proliferation of data centers across the state. With over 70 data centers operational and dozens more proposed, residents fear potential electric rate hikes and significant water table depletion, which could negatively impact agricultural practices.
Governor Braun stated on Hoosier Ag Today that "hyperscalers" — the major corporations behind these developments — must fully fund necessary power grid upgrades to prevent increased costs for existing families and businesses. He also mandated that all new data centers must incorporate water recycling infrastructure to mitigate environmental impact, particularly concerning the state's limited water resources.
While acknowledging the substantial economic benefits, Braun emphasized that decisions on data center approvals should rest with individual counties to ensure local suitability. The discussion comes as Amazon notably opened an $11 billion AI data center in St. Joseph County last October and plans a $15 billion facility in Lake County, highlighting the significant investments at stake. Indiana is balancing economic growth with environmental and community pressures, leaving the path forward dependent on stricter safeguards and local autonomy.
