Louisville Metro Council passes 6-month data center moratorium
The Louisville Metro Council has passed a six-month moratorium on new data center construction within the city, effective immediately. The mayor is expected to sign it into law, allowing city leaders to consider new regulations during this period. The ban will impact a recently proposed 350,000 sq. ft. data center on Kramers Lane but not an existing project off Camp Ground Road.
The Louisville Metro Council voted 24-1 to enact a six-month moratorium on new data center developments, a move supported by Mayor Greenberg, who had previously stated he would sign such a measure into law. Councilman Stuart Benson cast the sole dissenting vote against the temporary ban, which takes effect immediately.
During the six-month pause, Louisville city leaders plan to deliberate and establish new rules and regulations governing data centers within the city limits. The moratorium will not affect a data center project already under construction off Camp Ground Road, near Shively. However, it will impact a recent proposal for a 350,000 sq. ft. data center on Kramers Lane, whose application was submitted shortly before the council's vote and is now on hold.
