Ben Townsend, Google's global head of infrastructure and sustainability, announced a $1.1 million grant to Fort Wayne City Utilities for upgrades to its water treatment plant. This donation, revealed on Wednesday, is the first expenditure from Google's new $10 million Indiana Water Impact Fund, a statewide initiative. The investment aims to reduce overall water consumption and aligns with Google's national commitment to replenish more freshwater than it consumes by 2030.

The Fort Wayne Google data center, located on Adams Center Road, opened in December. Townsend explained that water-based cooling, used in areas with plentiful water like Fort Wayne, can reduce data center energy consumption by up to 20%. Despite Google's efforts, critics nationwide and locally have raised concerns about the significant power and water usage of large data centers, with some noting increased utility bills and worries about future rate hikes.

Officials from Fort Wayne City Utilities, Indiana Michigan Power, Google, and the Indiana state government have committed to preventing such negative impacts. Google's broader 2026 Water Stewardship Project Portfolio reported replenishing over 7 billion gallons of water last year through 165 projects across 97 watersheds. This includes approximately $1.5 million already invested in Indiana to help farmers with more efficient irrigation, thereby reducing water demands in areas surrounding Google's data centers. Townsend encouraged community leaders to use Google's transparency and sustainability commitments as a benchmark for other tech companies.
