Shelby County Commission Advances Proposed Data Center Moratorium
The Shelby County Commission advanced the first reading of an ordinance that would pause data center development in unincorporated Shelby County for up to one year. The proposed moratorium still requires two additional votes and would give county officials time to develop zoning regulations for data centers.
The Shelby County Commission advanced the first reading of a proposed data center moratorium sponsored by Commissioner Henry Brooks. If approved through two additional readings, the ordinance would pause data center development in unincorporated Shelby County for up to one year while county leaders develop zoning regulations for data center construction.
The proposal is similar to a moratorium under consideration by the Memphis City Council. Shelby County Attorney Barnes said certain conditions would also require approval from the Land Use Control Board, while an alternative ordinance is expected to be introduced at the commission's Oct. 21 meeting. The video also covered unrelated county, parks and health news.
