Farmville commissioners approve yearlong moratorium on data centers in unanimous vote
Farmville commissioners have unanimously approved a yearlong moratorium on data centers in the town. This decision allows the Board of Commissioners time to develop more formal regulations regarding data center development. This follows a similar moratorium enacted by Edgecombe County, while Beaufort County is considering its own.
The Farmville Board of Commissioners in North Carolina has unanimously enacted a 12-month moratorium on new data center development within the town's borders. Mayor Alex Joyner and the Board made the decision after a public comment period, during which one resident spoke against data center development. The moratorium aims to give town officials time to research and establish more formal regulations for these facilities.
While no specific data center projects have been approved, Mayor Joyner confirmed that East Energy Renewables had previously given a presentation to town officials in February, though no action resulted from it. Farmville is not the first municipality in Eastern North Carolina to impose such a pause; Edgecombe County previously enacted a similar measure. Additionally, Beaufort County is also considering a moratorium, with a public hearing on the matter scheduled for an upcoming meeting.
The widespread rise of data centers across the country and within North Carolina has prompted several local governments to temporarily halt development to better understand the potential environmental impacts and utility demands associated with these facilities.
