Closed downtown San Francisco Centre mall could be turned into an AI data center, according to proposal from K-G Growth Partners
K-G Growth Partners is exploring a proposal to convert the former Bloomingdale's space in San Francisco Centre into an AI data center, with public areas remaining open on lower floors. The concept is in its early stages, no permit application has been filed, and it could be affected by San Francisco's 45-day pause on approvals for new data centers.
K-G Growth Partners, working with an unnamed AI lab and a potential buyer, is exploring the conversion of the former Bloomingdale's space at the shuttered San Francisco Centre mall into an artificial intelligence data center. The proposal would keep public spaces on lower floors open while housing technology operations upstairs, which the Maryland-based firm says would differ from a conventional data center.
The project remains preliminary: the property sale has not closed and no permit application has been submitted. Its timing coincides with San Francisco's 45-day pause on approvals for new data centers, signed by Mayor Daniel Lurie while the city studies their infrastructure impacts. Lurie said his administration is working with the Board of Supervisors on the city's next steps.
