City Attorney John Espar clarified that the measure is a temporary pause, not a permanent ban, designed to allow the council to gather necessary information and establish governing policies.
Council members indicated that the moratorium would facilitate a thorough examination of various issues, including water consumption, power demand, noise, environmental effects, and the impact on property values, local labor, and infrastructure. Councilman Aaron Mishler, citing his experience at data center construction sites, raised concerns about the potential strain on the local construction workforce, which could detract from other critical projects like housing development.
