Rutherford County Commission considering a 12-month moratorium on AI data center
The Rutherford County Regional Planning Commission unanimously recommended a 12-month moratorium on new data center development, giving county officials time to study potential impacts and develop regulations. The proposal still requires review and approval by county officials, with the next meeting scheduled for Oct. 15 in Murfreesboro.
The Rutherford County Regional Planning Commission recommended a one-year pause on new data center applications after a public hearing in Murfreesboro. The proposed moratorium would allow county leaders to assess the effects of AI data centers and create regulations before additional projects move forward. Several residents supported the pause, with some calling for a permanent ban.
Commissioner Michael Shirley questioned whether a moratorium was necessary because existing Planned Unit Development reviews allow officials to impose project conditions. Planning Director Doug Demosi argued that the current process could still allow a project to advance and that a temporary halt would give the county more leverage while regulations are developed. The proposal will proceed through the county review process, with another meeting set for Oct. 15.
