Gov: Webster County commissioners, Carnahan Evans
Hundreds of residents packed the Marshfield High School auditorium in Marshfield, Missouri, to confront Webster County commissioners and developer Lumon Solutions regarding a proposed five-acre AI data center. The facility, planned for Rifle Range Road north of Marshfield, began site preparation without public announcement, drawing significant community backlash. Residents expressed a wide range of concerns, including potential environmental impacts, increased noise, light pollution, and high water consumption. Opponent Seth Atkison highlighted fears about heat generation, while others questioned the facility's water usage, despite the developer's claim of a 500-foot well supplying only a few gallons daily via a closed-loop system. A major demand from the community was for Webster County commissioners to implement a moratorium to halt the project. Associate Commissioner Dale Fraker stated that the county has engaged the law firm Carnahan Evans to provide legal guidance on the extent of the county's authority, particularly given the limited county oversight on planning and zoning. Fraker indicated that commissioners are seeking more information on environmental impacts and have not dismissed the possibility of further public meetings. However, resident Christine Vande Griend, an opponent, noted that the meeting left her with more unresolved questions, particularly concerning the project's ecological consequences. Lumon Solutions did not provide a comment when requested.
