The project still needs to undergo a use-by-special-review process before the Weld County Planning Commission and commissioners.
Weld County authorities are investigating the Global AI data center project, located at the former Carestream Health site between Windsor and Greeley, for multiple construction code violations. Weld County Planning Director David Eisenbraun stated that three compliance violations have been issued, ordering the company to halt construction. The county suspects Global AI has performed work on the building that was not permitted, extending beyond basic renovations to provide infrastructure for the data center without obtaining the necessary land approval.
Global AI, a New York-based artificial intelligence firm, aims to develop a sovereign AI data center in Weld County, collaborating with tech giants Nvidia and Humain. The company purchased the property in November. Global AI spokeswoman Gabi Bosiacki and COO Michael Cadigan did not respond to requests for comment regarding the violations.
The project is scheduled for review by the Weld County Planning Commission on September 1 and will undergo its use-by-special-review process on September 23. These hurdles were put in place following an April amendment by Weld County commissioners to restrict data center development. If approved by both the planning commission and commissioners, Global AI will be permitted to commence construction.
