Fort Wayne, Allen County debate future data center regulations following Google's expansion request

Google's data center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is seeking a significant expansion of its backup power capabilities, requesting a permit modification from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to add 228 emergency diesel generators to its existing 170+. This request for additional infrastructure at the 892-acre campus, which will eventually house 12 buildings, has reignited local concerns regarding the immense scale and cumulative environmental impacts of hyperscale data centers, including their water and energy consumption, noise, and wetland effects.

In response to these growing concerns, Fort Wayne Councilwoman Rohli Booker has introduced two proposals. One calls for a moratorium on certain council approvals for future large-scale data centers, aiming to pause development until more specific standards for such facilities can be developed. Her second proposal suggests forming a nine-member Community Infrastructure and Environmental Review Commission, tasked with scrutinizing major resource-intensive developments.

The Fort Wayne City Council recently delayed action on these proposals, rescheduling their consideration for October 13. The ongoing debate extends beyond Google's compliance with existing rules, with officials and residents questioning whether current zoning ordinances and development regulations, originally designed for conventional industrial projects, are adequate to manage the unique demands and phased expansion of hyperscale data centers. This discussion highlights the need for better coordination between city, county, and state authorities in managing such complex projects.
