Residents living near Google’s Fort Wayne data center say construction activity, persistent noise and stadium-like lighting have disrupted their daily lives. They argue that city officials and the media did not sufficiently highlight those impacts before the project was approved. Google has said it will work with homeowners to purchase adjoining properties.
Fort Wayne City Councilwoman Rohli Booker is proposing a pause of up to one year on certain final approvals for future large-scale data centers while planning officials and other experts recommend zoning standards. The proposed rules would address noise, lighting, backup power and environmental effects. The local electricians’ union is urging council members to reject the pause, warning it could deter investment and reduce future jobs.
