Indianapolis city leaders are debating new zoning regulations for data centers and a proposed moratorium on new approvals. City-County Council President Maggie A. Lewis announced plans to introduce an amendment for a temporary pause on data center approvals, following ongoing discussions regarding the facilities in the city.

Ahead of a Metropolitan and Economic Development meeting, residents protested the proposed zoning rules, arguing they do not go far enough to regulate data centers. Opponents believe the current proposal is too permissive, potentially incentivizing further development in Indianapolis and Marion County.

The committee meeting will include a vote on the zoning proposal, followed by a vote on the moratorium amendment. Residents are being given a chance for public comment, expressing hope that their voices will be heard as they advocate for stronger regulations. If the proposal passes committee, it will advance to the full City-County Council for a final vote.
