Local woman asks Council for transparency regarding data centers
Carrie Lahner, a local resident, addressed the Clear Lake City Council, urging greater transparency and community involvement regarding potential data center development in the city. She advocated for public town halls and a scientific advisory group to ensure residents have access to objective information and a meaningful opportunity for input before decisions are made. Although no official plans exist, interest in a data center for Clear Lake has been noted.
Clear Lake resident Carrie Lahner recently spoke before the City Council, advocating for increased transparency and community engagement concerning potential data center development in the area. Lahner, who has previously raised this issue, emphasized that her motivation is not anti-technology or anti-growth, but rather a deep concern for Clear Lake's future and ensuring thoughtful decision-making processes.
Lahner highlighted a perceived pattern where residents have felt excluded from significant decisions, with projects moving forward before the public fully understood the details or had an opportunity to provide input. She expressed worry that discussions about a potential data center might be progressing primarily among experienced organizations and stakeholders, potentially sidelining broader public awareness and input.
To address these concerns, Lahner proposed two key actions: first, that the city hold one or more public town halls specifically on the data center proposal. These meetings would clarify the project scope, past discussions, potential commitments, and provide a platform for genuine feedback and questions. Second, she recommended considering a scientific and technical advisory group. Such a group would independently evaluate planning, infrastructure, environmental impacts, and resource usage like energy and water, offering evidence-based guidance to city leadership. Lahner stressed that if the project is truly beneficial, it should withstand public scrutiny and scientific review.
Mayor Mark Ebeling had previously commented on the topic, stating the city's commitment to prioritizing community well-being and natural resources while exploring economic opportunities. He affirmed that any further discussions on a data center would include community information and feedback. Currently, no official company plans to move a data center into Clear Lake exist, though general interest in such development has been acknowledged.
