Serverfarm has submitted a proposal to Fairfax County, Virginia, for a new data center site called "Vienna Cloud" near Tysons. The project aims to transform two existing buildings and a parking garage at 7980 and 7990 Quantum Drive into a "completely modernized, architecturally refined, state-of-the-art office/data center." According to Jill Parks, an attorney for the applicant, the proposal is seeking exceptions to Fairfax County's regulations for such facilities.
Separately, calls to halt data center growth in Virginia, often dubbed the "data center capital of the world," are intensifying. Lawmakers from both political parties are publicly supporting a statewide moratorium on new data center approvals. They argue that Virginia must pause further development until the full impacts on critical resources like water and electricity are thoroughly assessed and addressed.
