Grove City passes 1-year data center moratorium | Top Stories
Grove City Council passed a one-year moratorium on data centers with a six-to-one vote. This decision followed a presentation by Headwaters site development for a proposed data center and strong opposition from residents concerned about increased bills and natural resource use. Despite initial legal threats, the developer stated they would not pursue legal action and still hope to work with the city.
Grove City Council voted six to one to enact a one-year moratorium on data center development in the city. The decision followed a city council meeting where Headwaters site development presented preliminary plans for a data center situated between Wrench and Betty Roads to a packed hall of residents. Many residents expressed strong opposition, voicing concerns about potential increases in utility bills and the strain on water resources, with some threatening to move out of the city if the data center were built.
Developers attempted to address these concerns by stating that water usage would be limited and the operating company would cover additional power costs. However, some council members and residents were troubled by a letter sent by the developer's lawyers, which suggested a moratorium would infringe upon due process. Despite this, the developer later affirmed they would not take legal action and expressed a continued desire to collaborate with the city throughout the moratorium period, maintaining their belief in the site's suitability for a data center.
