The Tyler Planning and Zoning Commission recently denied a proposal for a Bitcoin mining data center, following strong opposition from local residents. The commission meeting at Tyler's City Hall was packed with dozens of citizens who spoke against the project, planned for nearly two acres along West Irvin Street.

Residents, including longtime Tyler resident Keandre Goss, voiced concerns about the data center's potential negative effects on nearby historic neighborhoods and questioned its benefits to the community. They urged city leaders to prioritize existing residents and established communities over economic development that could render homes "unlivable."

After public comments, the Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-2 to deny the zoning request. Those who opposed the project viewed the vote as a crucial step in protecting their neighborhood from unwanted development.
