The booming data center industry in Austin, Texas, is driving a high demand for electricians. While this has not yet impacted home builders in Austin, a statewide program is being proposed to address the electrician workforce shortage, which some critics say could compromise craftsmanship and safety.

The demand for electricians in the Austin, Texas, region is surging due to numerous data center projects. Cameron Dodd of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 520, along with Troy Defrates, Dean for Design, Construction and Applied Technologies at Austin Community College, note a significant interest in the trade, with data centers offering lucrative careers and higher wages compared to residential work. Dodd estimates journeyman electricians in data centers can earn upwards of $40 an hour. To address the workforce gap, especially as electricians in Texas require 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is proposing a statewide Journeyman Electrician Education Program. This program would allow a course to count for 3,000 hours of the required training. However, Dodd expresses concern that this accelerated method could negatively affect craftsmanship and safety on construction sites and for the public. The state is currently accepting public comments on this proposal.
