Elk Grove Village firefighters responded to a smoke report at a data center under construction on September 8, marking the first time in over 26 years local crews were dispatched to a data center incident in the village. Crews arrived at 50 Northwest Point Blvd. to find light smoke dissipating from an equipment storage unit.
Fire Chief Richard Mikel confirmed via email that an overheated mechanical part caused the smoke, and power to the unit was subsequently shut off. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately 40 minutes to assist personnel and monitor air quality, reporting no fire, no lithium-ion battery involvement, and no hazard to the public. Site safety equipment reportedly functioned as designed, and no injuries were reported.
Mayor Craig Johnson highlighted that despite Elk Grove Village being the nation's second-largest data center hub, with 20 operational facilities and five more under construction, this was the first fire-related call. Engineering Director Benjamin Palony added that data centers in the village exceed standard safety codes, and local firefighters receive specialized training for such emergencies.
