New England's old buildings and old data centers could be upgraded to handle AI computing
An existing data center in Trumbull, Connecticut, is being retrofitted for AI computing by 365 Data Centers and Aphorio Carter. Residents are concerned about future expansion and have sought stronger limits, while the town has enacted a two-year moratorium on new data centers and rejected a proposed one-year moratorium covering capacity increases at existing facilities.
An older Trumbull data center is being upgraded to support artificial-intelligence computing through a retrofit led by 365 Data Centers and Aphorio Carter. First Selectman Vicki Tesoro said the upgrade would not increase the facility’s current size, water use, electricity demand or noise, but residents worry the property’s available space could enable significant future growth.
Trumbull has enacted a two-year moratorium on new data centers. Residents also asked the Planning and Zoning Commission to consider a one-year moratorium that would restrict capacity or intensity increases at existing facilities, but the commission rejected it as too vague to enforce. Members of the Trumbull AI Data Center Watch group continue seeking written commitments from the companies limiting the project’s future expansion.
