Ionia has no data center proposal, but leaders are starting the conversation
Ionia, Michigan city leaders and the planning commission held an informational meeting about the potential for future data center development, despite no current proposals. Residents expressed concerns about impacts on their community, data privacy, and the use of former prison sites. The discussion included presentations from Michigan State and Consumers Energy.
On Wednesday, Ionia city council and the planning commission hosted a joint informational meeting concerning the potential for data center development in the city, despite the absence of any concrete proposals. The event, held at a downtown theater, aimed to educate public officials and residents about what a data center could mean for Ionia. Representatives from Michigan State University and Consumers Energy provided insights, with MSU professor Gene Hardy suggesting that a data center proposal in Ionia is unlikely soon due to public pushback across Michigan and a lack of shovel-ready land.
However, Hardy also noted that Ionia possesses a significant water capacity following a prison closure, which could potentially support data center infrastructure. This point did not resonate positively with all attendees. Residents voiced their concerns during public comment. Brandon Martinez, who moved to Ionia County for a quieter life, worried about the impact on his family's future and data privacy. Joseph Dreer, who lives near the former prison site, expressed strong objections to the idea of a data center being located close to his home. Neighbors indicated they would closely monitor any future developments.
